WARREN (WWJ) — The search continues for a suspect who stabbed a dog at a Warren apartment complex last weekend.

Warren police officers were called to the Warren Manor Apartments on Dequindre north of 8 Mile Road Sunday afternoon after someone found a dog who had been stabbed.

The 911 caller told police the dog, a white and brown husky, was bleeding profusely and it appeared to still have a knife stuck in its body.

Responding officers found the male husky in a field surrounding the apartment complex and noticed it was bleeding from three stab wounds. Officers found a bloody kitchen knife lying on the ground next to the dog.

Officers put the dog into a patrol car and rushed him to a veterinarian hospital. Vet staff members told police the dog, which had no collar or microchip, is expected to make a full recovery.

On Tuesday the woman who owns the dog responded to the police department and told them she learned her husky may have been stabbed. She was cooperative with police and was able to confirm ownership.

The woman told police the dog “has displayed aggressive behavior towards people in the past,” including herself.

She said the dog had run away from home about four days prior to the stabbing and she had not been able to find him. The owner allowed police to check her apartment, which “did not show signs of violence or foul play relative to the husky’s injuries,” police officials said.

Investigators have tried talking to other residents at Warren Manor, but few have come forward to speak.

Warren Manor management has been cooperative, but prior to Wednesday, police had not been able to access surveillance footage.

Warren Police Commissioner Charles Rushton told WWJ’s Luke Sloan Wednesday afternoon the department is “are actively looking at video surveillance throughout the apartment complex to see if anything was captured.”

Rushton says his department takes crimes against animals seriously.

“Anybody that would mistreat an animal like that needs to be brought to justice,” Rushton said. “I think they’re obviously a danger to other animals out there, but probably a danger to society in general.”

The case remains under investigation and officials are asking anyone who knows something about the dog’s stabbing to call Warren Police Detective Kranz at 586-574-4780.
