The project — partially funded by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s office — is part of a plan to remove nine dams along the Mahoning River, opening up 32 miles of unobstructed river.

Last month, DeWine handed out another $5 million to the City of Warren. The money came from the Governor’s Appalachian Community Grant Program’s Wonderful Waterfronts initiative.

Ohio’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said removing the dams promotes healthier waterways.
