WALLACE — The Wallace Rose-Hill Recreation Department hosted five matches on Sunday which included two 9U matches, one 12U match, one 15U match, and a 17U match which saw Warsaw Set to Kill defeat the Wallace Rally Rascals 25-21, 25-19.

While there are multiple teams that make up the 9U, 12U and 15U volleyball rec leagues, only two teams make up the 17U co-ed leagues. This means that two teams have played against each other all season long and have had plenty of time to get to know each other’s games, and that showed from the beginning of the match as there was little to separate the two sides.

Warsaw came out strong in the six-on-six match, and they took an early 8-4 lead; however, they were unable to expand their lead further as Wallace won the next three points to cut their lead to one. The back-and-forth battle continued, and close to halfway through the set, the teams were tied 11-11.

While Wallace was able to tie the score, they were never able to take a lead though, and Warsaw won five of the next six points to take a 16-12 lead. Later in the set after trailing by 22-16, Wallace made another strong comeback attempt and they cut the score to 23-21. Warsaw won the last two points of the set though which included an excellent serve by Sienna Ponder and a put away kill by Ty’Quise Wilson on the final point to take the set 25-21.

In the second set, both teams once again came out playing at an almost even level and through the first 17 points of the set Warsaw led just 9-8. Just like in the first set though, Warsaw found a way to take a sizable lead at a crucial point in the set, and they won eight of the next 11 points to take a 17-11 lead. Wallace would make a small comeback to cut the Warsaw lead to 18-14, but ultimately Warsaw’s sizable lead proved to be too much to overcome, and they took the second set 25-19 and the match two sets to zero.

With the win, Warsaw improved to 4-1 overall this season with two matches remaining.

Warsaw head coach Melsheena Wilson said she was pleased with the win, but regardless of whether her team wins or loses, her ultimate goal is to continue to see the summer league expand and provide her players valuable playing time to prepare for the high school season.

“We are trying to get more players in that age group to get more (teams) going,” Wilson said. “I’m the volleyball coach at the middle school, and I’m now currently coaching at the high school, but I’ve just been talking to the kids and letting them know it is available out there. From the 16 and 17, I do have about four to five players that are at the high school level between J.V. and varsity.”
