Another big box discount retailer is closing stores. Is RI's Big Lots in danger?

The discount retail chain Big Lots will be closing dozens of stores this year, though the fate of Rhode Island's one location is unknown.

Big Lots stated in a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that 35 to 40 of their store locations would close this year – but they also plan to open three stores this year.

"In 2024, the U.S. economy has continued to face macroeconomic challenges including elevated inflation, which has adversely impacted the buying power of our customers," the filing said.

According to the financial disclosure, sales dropped 10.2% between the first quarters of 2023 and 2024, equating to a loss of about $114.5 million.

Big Lots' only Rhode Island location is in Warwick at 2485 Warwick Avenue.

The chain primarily sells furniture and décor products, as well as food and clothing.

The document did not disclose which store locations would be closing, so we don't know whether the Warwick location will be closing or staying open.

If the Warwick location does close, then Rhode Islanders will have to travel to Massachusetts to get their Big Lots fix. The Commonwealth has 23 locations, including those in Attleboro, Revere and Plymouth.

Big Lots did not immediately respond USA Today requests for comment and closing information.

It's not the only big box discount retailer in trouble in Rhode Island. The Bob's Stores' Cranston location also closing.
