WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after two people were struck by vehicles within moments of each other in Warwick on Sunday night.

At approximately 9:40 p.m., officers were called to Quaker Lane after a driver traveling south hit a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, officers found both individuals on the roadway: the initial crash victim, a 44-year-old man, and the driver, a 26-year-old woman.

According to police, after the woman got out of her car to check on the person she hit, a different vehicle hit her and ran over the man.

The vehicle, which police described as a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee, then fled the scene.

The first person hit was pronounced deceased on the scene. His name has not yet been released.

The woman was brought to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

Police said criminal charges will be pursued.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information is asked to contact the Warwick Police Traffic Unit at (401) 468-4200 or submit an anonymous tip by texting WARWICKPD to 847411.
