Thursday night, the Waseca Bluejays baseball team opened postseason play in the Section 2AA tournament with a road matchup against the No. 7 seeded Triton Cobras. The No. 10 seeded Bluejays stunned the Triton faithful with 12 runs through the first three innings on the way to a 13-0 five inning victory over the Cobras.

With the win, Waseca advanced to the second round and will travel to Belle Plaine to take on the No. 2 seeded Belle Plaine Tigers Tuesday, May 28. By earning the victory, the Bluejays guaranteed themselves at least two more games this season.

Sabastian Teague started on the mound for Waseca and pitched five innings of one-hit, shutout, baseball. He allowed just two walks while striking out five.

The Jays got things started immediately in the top of the first inning when Keaton Roeker ripped a double into centerfield followed by a pair of infield errors that allowed two more players to reach base safely while Rocker scored on the second one. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Teague drew a bases loaded walk for a run followed by a wild pitch that allowed Carter Ellis to score and put Waseca up 3-0.

In the top of the second, Waseca put together a one-out rally and began to plate run after run beginning with an RBI single from Nate Engel-Mueller and an RBI bases loaded walk from Ellis. Shane Engel-Mueller and Teague drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to bring runs home before an error and a hit-by-pitch brought the eighth and ninth runs across the plate.

Waseca’s patience at the plate continued in the top of the third with four straight walks loading the bases and scoring a run before a pair of fielder’s choice plays allowed two more runs to score, putting the team up 12-0. The 13th and final run of the night came when Roeker hit a grounder to shortstop that scored Max Wirtz from third.

As a team, the Jays drew 10 walks in the victory to pair with six hits and six fielding errors from the Cobras.

Waseca’s second round game with Belle Plaine Tuesday is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. with the winner advancing to the section quarterfinals and the losing team entering the consolation bracket.
