Friday night football is back, as high school teams returned to action this week for another season. The Waseca Bluejays faced off against a team in week one that handed them their first loss and also their last loss of last season.

The Bluejays traveled to Stewartville to take on the Tigers in a rematch of last year's class AAA quarterfinal. The Bluejays were once again no match for the Tigers, as Stewartville handed them a 24-6 loss in the season opener.

The Bluejays got on the board first with just under 2 minutes left in the first quarter, as senior quarterback Carter Ohnstad threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Damarius Russell. The Bluejays had an early 6-0 lead, missing the point after attempt.

That was all the points the Bluejays could put on the board, though, as the Tigers scored 24 straight unanswered points.

The Tigers scoring started with a 18-yard touchdown run by senior Dylan Scanlan to give the them a 7-6 lead in the second quarter. They added another score with a field goal to close out the first half leading 10-6.

Stewartville's 14 points in the second half came off of rushing touchdowns by junior Abdimalik Abdi and Scanlan.

The 24-6 loss marks the third time in less than a year's time that the Bluejays have lost to Stewartville. The only loss Waseca has encountered during that time besides those three losses was on the road in Fairmont last October.

The Bluejays look to bounce back at home next week against St. Peter. The Bluejays won against the Saints in last year's matchup 42-0.
