The Waseca Bluejays football team had a long drive to their week 3 matchup against the Marshall Tigers on the road, but that didn’t affect their play on the field, as they came away with a victory over the Tigers for the second year in a row.

Even though the Bluejays did not shut out the Tigers like they did last year, the Bluejays still came out on top 20-14. This puts the Bluejays at 2-1 on the season just like at this time last season.

The Bluejays were the first to score, as senior quarterback Carson Ohnstad ran it in for a 14 yard touchdown halfway in the first quarter. The PAT was no good as Waseca took a 6-0 lead.

Defense was the story in the second quarter, as both teams held their ground, with Waseca not giving up any points during the first half. The Bluejays scored again late in the second quarter, as senior wide receiver Damarius Russell had a 4-yard touchdown reception. The PAT for the Bluejays was good this time around with them taking a 13-0 lead to go into halftime.

The third quarter was a similar story to the beginning of the second quarter, as no points were scored from both teams.

The Tigers were marching at the end of the quarter though, as they scored at the beginning of the fourth to cut the lead down to seven as the Bluejays still led 13-6 after a failed PAT by the Tigers.

But the Bluejays wasted no time in responding to the Tigers’ score as Russell had a 61 yard touchdown reception from Ohnstad for their second receiving and passing touchdown of the night and Ohnstad’s third overall touchdown.

Down 20-6, the Tigers scored yet again in the final quarter on a rushing touchdown and were able to get a two-point conversion to cut Waseca’s lead down to just 6 with just over 5 minutes remaining in regulation.

The Bluejays held on to the lead to win their second straight game of the season.

The Bluejays will be on the road once again next week as they will travel to Belle Plaine. The matchup will be the Bluejays first against a section opponent this year.
