As construction continues on the main drag through Washburn, a local club wants to help businesses impacted by the project.

To encourage people to support Washburn businesses, the Washburn Lions Club has launched a bingo-type game for shoppers to play while out and about downtown.

To play, people buy a card and obtain stamps by shopping at the more than 30 businesses throughout Washburn, said club member Tutti Wiatr.

Collecting five stamps qualifies shoppers for a gift card drawing, and collecting 10 gets shoppers entered into a 50-50 raffle, she noted.

By playing, the club hopes to expose people to new business that they might not have known were in Washburn before.

“I didn’t know there were 31 businesses in Washburn before this. I realize there’s way more than what I’ve been to,” she said.

Now is an important time to support businesses as Bayfield Street remains closed, Wiatr said.

“We have been thinking as a club this would be a hard time for local businesses. We asked what’s something we can do for the business community that supports them,” she said. “Everybody we talked to was thankful people were thinking of them and how construction is effecting their businesses.”
