The 100 Who Care Ashland and Bayfield Counties awarded over $10,000 to The Club in Washburn at its July 2024 meeting.

“Always a bridesmaid, never a bride; however, the third time proved to be a charm," said Coke Lindsey, president of The Club. The organization had been nominated by the 100 Who Care members two times prior to being the chosen.

“The fact that the members nominated us as one of the top nominees for the environmental/recreation/garden and animal category three times told us that we are doing the right thing, and the community acknowledged our hard work. The recent event’s other top nominees were The Chequamegon Humane Association and Mt Ashwabay, part of the Ashwabay Alliance, so it had to be a tough decision for the members. We are extremely pleased to be chosen to receive $10,000 for our operating expenses, which is a hard area in which to find funding sources. We hired a 15-hour-a-week ‘program coordinator,’ better described as someone who does “whatever needs to get done,” Lindsey said.

NorthLakes Community Clinic is the founding organization and host of the 100 Who Care Ashland and Bayfield Counties Chapter. They have partnered with Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua to host events for the past year. The 100 Who Care Alliance is a national movement based on the giving circle concept.

A giving circle involves individuals coming together, each pooling $100, learning collaboratively about their community’s needs and deciding where to donate the money. The underlying premise is that people often donate $100 to various organizations and wonder if that amount has much effect, whereas the collective $10,000 to local organizations makes a considerable impact.

At the July 13 event, there were more than 20 nonprofits who participated in the nonprofit fair. This helps the members receive additional information about their work and programs to make well-informed philanthropy decisions.
