The Washburn Sharptails remained perched atop the Upper 13 Baseball league standings, but the ‘Sharps are hardly secure after splitting a home doubleheader against the second place Lake Superior Sea Dogs on July 21. Washburn took the first game 9-8 in a gripping extra inning clash, then fell 6-5 in seven innings in the second game. Look for the Sharptails to get a win on July 28 at home against a tough Tri-County TimberJaxx team that will be hungry to play the role of spoiler and knock the ‘Sharps from their precarious but still league leading nest. Washburn now shares first place with both Lake Superior and the Glidden Orioles, all with 7-2 league records. In other games, Tony and Iron City blasted away in their doubleheader, splitting games with the second being a 12-11 shootout that Tony slugged to a win.
