    Teachers: 12 hours of continuing education credits for $10 through Red River Heritage Symposium includes lunches, tours

    WASHINGTON, Ark. ( KTAL/KMSS ) – Historic Washinton State Park is scheduled to host a symposium and a two-day workshop that will focus on the past 200 years of history in Washington.

    The 18 th annual Red River Heritage Symposium will be held at the park on Sat., July 27.

    The event will focus on how the community of Washington has influenced and impacted the area since it was founded in 1824 along the great bend of the Red River .

    Dr. John Wilsey, a professor at Southern  Baptist Theological Seminary, will speak on the topic of “Who are Americans: Democracy in America by Alexander de Tocqueville .”

    Other speakers at the event will include Josh Williams of Historic Washington State Park, the Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives’ Melissa Nesbitt, Dr. Carl Drexler of the Arkansas Archeological Survey, and more.

    Come enjoy presentations about how archeology has developed historic Washington, the Impact of Washington and its future, Washington and America’s story over 200 years, and Act No. 247 or 1929: the birth of the preservation movement in Arkansas.

    An all-day workshop for teachers and researchers will take place on Friday and Saturday. Lunch is included on both days, and teachers can earn a total credit of 12 hours by attending the workshop.

    A bus tour along the path of the “Southwest Trail” will also be included in the workshop. It’s sponsored by the Arkansas State Archives.

    The price of the workshop is $40 and the sessions will help teachers incorporate Washington, Arkansas, and topics from the 1800s into their classroom curriculums.

    Tickets to attend the symposium are $20, and a $50 discount is offered to those who want to attend both the symposium and the workshop.

    Check-in for the events begins at 8 a.m. at the 1874 Hempstead County Courthouse Visitor Center in Washington.

    Tours of Historic Washington State Park’s restoration village are available between the hours of  8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
