More Storms, Less Insurance: St. Louis’s Flood Insurance Woes

Storms are getting worse. But some St. Louis-area residents still can’t get flood insurance.
NASHVILLE — Many victims of mid-July flash flooding around the St. Louis region are uninsured or under-covered for their damages. And in some of the places hit hardest by the recent floodwaters, federally backed flood insurance is not even available, leaving residents unable to buy the most common, and often most affordable, coverage nationwide.
Southern Illinois hit with major flooding
NASHVILLE, Ill. — Major flash flooding led to road closures, forced the evacuation of residential areas and drowned field crops on July 16 in parts of southern Illinois. “I’m 63 years old and this is the highest amount of rain I’ve ever seen in the shortest period of time, especially in July,” Washington County Farm Bureau President Gerald Kuberski told FarmWeek.

Washington County EMA Addresses Concerns Regarding Tuesday’s Flood Event
NASHVILLE (WMIX) – Authorities in Washington County are addressing concerns about a dam and flooding throughout the city of Nashville on Tuesday. Two staff members from the Army Corps of Engineers in St. Louis, Missouri, along with City of Nashville employees, have inspected the Nashville Reservoir. The area has been deemed safe for residents to return in regards to the dam’s integrity.
Nashville dam overtopped; Tri-state dams not at a risk
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ill. (KHQA) — Tuesday's heavy rainfall caused Nashville's reservoir dam in Washington county, Illinois to be overtopped. The rain also caused a secondary dam failure, flooding the town. The Tri-states also have locks and dams along the Mississippi river, but they are navigation dams, not reservoir dams.
