The six members of the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame who were inducted in the hall's 32nd class in 2018:. According to the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame: “Dietrich, also known as 'Coach D,' has been making an impact on high school athletes since 1974. While attending Salisbury State College, he competed in football, wrestling and lacrosse. After graduating, he became an assistant wrestling coach at Smithsburg High School, before taking the helm in 1979.
Fire damages Harpers Ferry Bridge, railroad traffic restored a day later
SANDY HOOK, Md. — Some railroad traffic came to a halt Monday afternoon in Maryland after a fire damaged Harpers Ferry Bridge. According to the Washington County Division of Emergency Services, crews were alerted to a fire at the CSX railroad bridge over the Potomac River in Sandy Hooks shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Smithsburg Wastewater Treatment Plant to Receive Upgrades
HAGERSTOWN, MD (June 24, 2024) The Washington County Department of Water Quality is upgrading and expanding the capacity of the Smithsburg Wastewater Treatment Plant. The current plant capacity is 333,000 gallons per day and will be expanded to a rated capacity of 450,000 gallons per day. The additional capacity will create an additional 585 residential services for future development in and around the Town of Smithsburg.
Washington County government launches 2024 Washington County Ice Cream Trail
The Washington County government has launched the 2024 Washington County Ice Cream Trail, which will run until the last day of summer, Sept. 21. The ice cream trail offers residents and visitors a way to explore the county. The trail highlights local ice cream shops. Participants are encouraged to visit each stop on the trail.
