Washington County Controller April Sloane has bail revoked in animal cruelty case
WASHINGTON, Pa. (KDKA) - The Washington County Controller is once again behind bars. A judge revoked the bail of April Sloane on Wednesday morning. She is currently facing animal cruelty charges after police searched her home in December and found a dog had died of starvation. Part of Sloane's bail conditions were she was not allowed to own pets or have any access to animals. However, according to her mother, she was living with a man who owned a cat. "I think she got what she deserved because she thinks she's above the law," Sherrie Sloane said. "But as a mother, this is...

California has produced a pair of presidents. If the question pops up on Trivia Night, the answer probably is Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. As it applies to Rotary International, two leaders of the worldwide service organization once belonged to the club in Washington County’s California Borough, which had about 5,700 residents when Monessen native Stephanie Urchick attended her first meeting there in 1991.

CANONSBURG, Pa. — A nostalgic clock in Canonsburg, Washington County, has been given new life. "People would always talk about, 'Oh, the clock by the bank doesn't work anymore. Cheers & Jeers
Cheers: Let’s be honest: most of us, when we pull into a garage to get our cars fixed, expect a male mechanic to be there to look under the hood and offer a diagnosis. Work in auto repair, maintenance and towing is one of those professions that has traditionally been considered the domain of men. But there’s no reason women can’t be equally fascinated with cars or have an aptitude for fixing them, and as an article in the Herald-Standard pointed out this week, increasing numbers of women are working in the auto repair sector. In 1999, only a little more than 1% of women worked in that field, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, but that number was at 12% as of 2022, and there’s no reason to believe it won’t go higher. Becky Tom, who co-owns EQ Muffler in Uniontown, recounted how one older customer insisted on speaking to a man in the shop, even though Tom is qualified to work on vehicles. We think – and hope – this kind of sexism will soon be a part of the past.
