Power bills to increase for Brightridge customers
BrightRidge announced Wednesday it approved a 1.5% electric rate increase. BrightRidge said the increase, which comes after six years of high inflation without a raise in rates, will help it balance its 2025 fiscal year budget. According to BrightRidge, the rate increase for residential and small commercial customers will include a $2 per month increase in the base energy charge and a slight increase per kWh. BrightRidge Broadband rates will stay the same due to strong customer growth in the fiscal year and expansion into areas, including Colonial Heights and rural areas in Washington County. The increase for electric will start in October.
People Inc. to receive $3.4 Million grant
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently awarded People Inc. 3.4 million dollars for its Head Start Program. This grant will help Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, and Washington Counties as well as the City of Bristol. VSP investigating 2 fatal crashes late last week in SWVA
Virginia State Police is investigating 2 fatal crashes in Southwest Virginia late last week. The first occurred last Thursday around 4 p.m. on Route 611 in Washington County. That’s when the Jeep driven by 43 year old Seth A. Easley of Saltville, Va. Lost control on Route 611. Easly died at the scene. The second crash occurred last Friday at 7:00 a.m. on Interstate 81 northbound in Smyth County. A Toyota driven by 36 year old Casey A. Hornsby of Central City, KY. was heading northbound on Interstate 81 in the right lane when the driver lost control flipping the vehicle several times. Casey was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the Sequoia suffered minor injuries. Both crashes remain under investigation.

The Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal single vehicle crash that happened Thursday, June 20 at 3:56 p.m. on Route 611 in Washington County, authorities say. According to authorities, a 1995 Jeep Wrangler was going westbound on the bridge over Tumbling Creek when the driver lost control, turned sideways, and hit the guardrail.
