Following their Game 1 loss to the New York Rangers, the Washington Capitals took the ice for an optional skate at Prudential Center, where they saw defensemen Nick Jensen and Rasmus Sandin continue to make progress.

Both skated at the optional in non-contact jerseys and per head coach Spencer Carbery, they are trending in the right direction and are possibilities for Game 2 on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.

Both Jensen and Sandin were hurt on big hits along the boards and have not played since their respective injuries.

Sandin has been out since April 7 against the Ottawa Senators, when he left the game after being hit up high by Parker Kelly. Days later, on April 13 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Jensen was pushed into the boards by Michael Eyssimont and had to be stretchered off the ice.

"Both possibilities for Game 2," Carbery said after practice in New Jersey. "Just depending on how it looks tomorrow, we'll evaluate them after morning skate tomorrow and then we'll see where it is tomorrow afternoon."

Meanwhile, Vincent Iorio, who has been helping to fill the void left by Sandin and Jensen, did not skate and is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury, per Carbery.

Iorio was hurt in the second period of Game 1 after being hit from behind into the end boards by Alexis Lafreniere, and he appeared to injure his arm and shoulder on the play.

"It was borderline. Young player. I feel bad for him because he puts himself in a bad spot," Carbery said of the hit. "Really needs to move the puck quicker there just to get it out of his hands, and then he hangs onto it and (Lafreniere) wallops him."

It is unclear what the blue line will look like or who will be available for Game 2 on Tuesday, but if Iorio, Jensen and Sandin can't go, then Lucas Johansen, the only other extra defenseman up with the club at this point in time, will draw into the mix.
