Capitals Make Offers To 3 Prospects To Extend Rights, Lose Rights To 2 Others

The Washington Capitals got some offseason business done on Saturday, a tell-all deadline for prospects across the league, as they made the decision on some of their future pieces.

Washington made bonafide offers to extend the rights of 2023 draft selections Cam Allen, Patrick Thomas and Brett Hyland.

Allen appeared in just 25 games for the OHL's Guelph Storm this season due to a shoulder injury and subsequent surgery, putting up two goals and seven assists for nine points.

Thomas had a strong showing in his third season with the OHL's Brantford Bulldogs, posting 21 goals and 45 assists for 66 points in 57 games.

Hyland, who suffered a tough knee injury and had to get surgery last season, had an impressive post-draft year with 32 goals and 27 assists for 69 points in 66 games with the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings.

The Capitals, however, chose not to sign either 2022 fifth-rounder Jake Karabela or 2020 seventh-rounder Oskar Magnusson to an entry-level contract by the 5 p.m. deadline, giving up their exclusive signing rights.

In 65 games with the Storm this season, Karabela put up 25 goals and 30 assists for 55 points, along with a plus/minus rating of minus-16. Magnusson, who signed with the HockeyAllsvenskan's AIK IF and played overseas, had two goals and seven assists for nine points, along with a plus/minus of minus-3. He also had four assists in four playoff games.

Magnusson can sign elsewhere as a free agent, and Karabela is free to re-enter the 2024 NHL Draft, which is from June 28-29 in Las Vegas.
