Ethen Frank Showing That He Deserves NHL Chance, And It Will Make Next Year Interesting As He Becomes RFA With Capitals

After just missing out on a call-up this season for the Washington Capitals, Ethen Frank is putting on a show in these Calder Cup Playoffs after another strong outing with the Hershey Bears this year. And it may just be enough to earn him an NHL spot next season.

Frank leads Hershey with eight goals in nine playoff games as he's shown tremendous chemistry alongside Hendrix Lapierre and Joe Snively. He has scored in each of the last seven games, proving to be the X-factor that's carrying Hershey right back to the Calder Cup Final.

The 26-year-old is coming off a 29-goal, 47-point showing in the regular season, and also made his second consecutive AHL All-Star Weekend appearance. His speed and shot are his two biggest strengths, and he also has quick hands and good hockey sense that allow him to generate high-quality chances and get to the right areas.

Given his production, as well as the fact that he's helped the Bears remain a dominant force in the AHL, Frank has shown that he has earned his NHL chance and could make the full-time NHL jump this coming season.

It also makes what his next contract will look like rather interesting. After earning himself a one-year, two-way contract last season, he is set to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights this summer. He has certainly earned his fair share of attention, and his play should be rewarded.

That said, a one-way deal is likely for Frank, but also, expect him to be one of the Washington prospects that earns a promotion next season. The Nebraska native did all of the right things for a call-up, but the timing just wasn't right this season.

Now, though, he's shown he can be a consistent threat on offense and has impressed at both ends of the ice. He's a versatile right winger who can take on big minutes and make noise on the forecheck, and his speed and ability is something that the Capitals desperately needs for their ailing offense.

For now, though, Frank is focused on a second Calder Cup, which would also mean a lot for his extension.
