Barry Svrluga had a great piece in the Post over the weekend about Stephen Strasburg, and all the back and forth he and the Nationals had as he tried to rehab his injuries and get back on the mound in DC.

In the piece, it’s revealed how the team was sending him letters and most doctors agreed it was time to move on, but Strasburg did anything and everything he could to try to get back – but only made the damage worse until it got to the point where he had to retire officially.

“You think of Stras as this aloof guy – he opened up more towards the end of his career, but we experienced it first-hand where he didn’t really like to talk to you, but he was a super talent with unbelievable potential,” EB said. “He had all these ailments and everybody would get frustrated with him, but I think he has nothing to be ashamed of. We won a World Series because of him – a lot of guys, but he was a massive part of it. He just couldn't stay healthy and he, you could see the turmoil in him.”

And that turmoil, it seems, isn’t because of the seven-year, $240 million deal that saw the Nats get all of 31 1/3 MLB innings out of him – it’s because he couldn’t live up to the expectation he set for himself, which is WHY he was so dogged in his rehab.

“He doesn't want to go out like that; that’s the last thing he wants,” Cakes said.

“Eight starts after signing that deal, Barry described him as tearing up as he was recounting this stuff,” EB said.

JP and Bish read some of the things in the article Strasburg tried to rehab and the eventual effects of it all, finishing with Nats team physician Robin West telling him ‘it’s not getting better,’ and eventually, reality won out,

“He was so engaged in trying to get back to where he was and rehabilitating the arm, doing everything in his power, and he kept referring throughout the article to people going up to him and say, hey man, thank you for all you did in your career,” EB said. “He said he was always like, ‘cool, man,’ but inside he was like thank you for what, I didn't live up to my potential, essentially – and it seems like he’s having a hard time reconciling it all.”

“I'm sure he's haunted by the, the way his career has ended, but he's got nothing to be ashamed of,” Cakes said. “He won a World Series, and gave everything his body could physically give and then some, and he'll probably never be the same.”

Take a listen to it all above as the guys reminisce about Strasburg’s success and more on the article!
