The Washington Nationals have placed Joey Gallo in the 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain, and recalled infielder Trey Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester.

Nats manager Dave Martinez said after Tuesday’s game that Gallo, who was 1-for-3 before leaving after grounding out in the seventth inning, pulled his left hamstring, but there is no timetable for his return as of yet.

Gallo is hitting .164 with five home runs, 11 RBI, 21 walks, and 17 runs scored in 46 games for the Nationals this season, and GM Mike Rizzo praised his defensive play at first base – where Gallo is fifth in the NL in Outs Above Average – in his weekly appearance with the Sports Junkies on Wednesday.

“He doesn’t get enough credit for the defense he’s playing; I think he’s No. 1 in baseball in defensive runs saved at first base, and he’s been great,” Rizzo said.

Lipscomb, 23, will now have his third stint in the Majors this year, where he has hit .252 with one homer, nine RBI, and 10 steals in 33 games. He has played first, second, and third base in his time in DC this year, and will likely split time at first with Joey Meneses, who has played the other 28 games at first not started by Gallo or Lipscomb this year.
