Call Your Mother Georgetown decision delayed to the fall

Call Your Mother caught a break this week when D.C. zoning officials delayed a decision about the future of its Georgetown location.

Why it matters: Some neighbors are waging a campaign to shut it down, calling the bagel shop a nuisance because of its big crowds who sometimes eat on rowhouse stoops.

Driving the news: Call Your Mother is seeking a special exception to continue operating as a food establishment at the small corner store at 35th and O Street.

    • The Board of Zoning Adjustment decided to revisit the topic in late September after an hourslong meeting on Wednesday.

Between the lines: Despite complaints from passionate neighbors, the board appeared hopeful that the business could continue operating with improvements.

    • "I think we can work on a good neighbor policy," said board member Anthony Hood.
    • The Office of Planning also supports its continued operation — and the board often follows its recommendations.

Catch up quick: The shop opened in 2020 after an initial battle with neighbors. It was eventually taken to court, after which D.C. zoning officials admitted earlier this year they erred in the process of allowing Call Your Mother to operate there.

    • Therefore, the board instructed the shop to apply for a special exception.

Despite the controversy, many people also testified in support of the shop. "It's a very bright spot, not just for the pink home," said O Street resident Josh Randle. "It brings a lot of joy to the neighborhood."
