The Washington Wizards ended up with two lottery picks and three overall in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft Wednesday night, thanks to a blockbuster surprise: per Woj and Josh Robbins, the team is trading Deni Avdija to Portland for Malcolm Brogdon, the 14th pick in the draft, the second-most favorable of Portland’s three first-rounders (their own, Boston’s, and Milwaukee’s) in 2029, and second-round picks in 2028 and 2030.

And, with that No. 14 pick, the Wizards selected Pitt guard Carlton “Bub” Carrington.

Carrington, who is from Baltimore and is a cousin of NBA star Rudy Gay, played just one season at Pitt but was an immediate starter as a true freshman. He averaged 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in 33.2 minutes per game over 33 contests, and was named to the ACC All-Rookie Team.

Brogdon, 31, was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2016-17 and Sixth Man of the Year in 2022-23, but the Wiz will now be his fourth team in four seasons. He played just 39 games last year for the Blazers, averaging 15.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game, and will make $22.5 million next season on an expiring deal – meaning he is likely to be a hot name at the trade deadline next winter.

Avdija, 23, just signed a very team-friendly four-year, $55 million extension that was set to kick in this coming season, with this year’s $15.625 million salary and cap hit the highest in the deal. He played and started 75 games last year and was one of the Wizards’ top players, averaging 14.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game and finishing sixth in Most Improved Player voting.
