WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Anacostia Riverkeeper announced on X that the Anacostia River Splash! event has been postponed.

This comes after the organization took water quality samples on Friday following Wednesday’s weather, according to the X post.

Anacostia Riverkeeper said the results showed above E. coli recreational standards.

The event is being postponed until July 13.

Saturday was going to be the first time in over 50 years that people would have been able to swim in the Anacostia River.

This is the third time that the Anacostia River Splash has been postponed.

Back in 1971, swimming or wading in waters around D.C. was made illegal because of safety concerns surrounding the water quality. But since then, Anacostia Riverkeeper and other advocacy groups have been working hard to improve the water quality.
