ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals aren't done making upgrades to the blue line and added another key piece to the puzzle on Monday, signing defenseman Matt Roy to a six-year contract.

Roy's deal carries an average annual value of $5.75 million.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound blueliner is coming off an impressive season for the Los Angeles Kings where he not only did a solid job patrolling the blue line but also helped break the puck out and get the play moving up ice.

In 81 games for Los Angeles this past season, Roy picked up five goals and 20 assists for 25 points.

Roy is a right-hand shot who brings a lot of talent and defensive awareness to the mix, and replaces Nick Jensen, who was traded to the Ottawa Senators for Jakob Chychrun shortly before the start of free agency.

The 29-year-old can eat heavy minutes and is a strong skater who is mobile and versatile. He takes very good care of the puck and can play with pretty much anyone, making him a reliable asset. He is also underrated when it comes to his shutdown style of play.

On the right side, Washington adds Roy to a mix that also includes John Carlson, Trevor van Riemsdyk and Ethan Bear.
