WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — To celebrate America’s birthday, Metro will be ramping up its services and will be offering riders fare-free trips on the evening of July 4.

Starting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, riders will be able to take Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess for free in celebration of Independence Day. In addition, Metrorail will be ramping up its services in the afternoon to “rush hour service levels,” the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said in a news release.

Here are some 4th of July celebrations taking place in the DMV

“For the second straight year, we’re providing fare-free service for part of the holiday to give everyone a stress-free, easy way to beat the traffic to backyard barbecues, parades, fireworks and other festivities,” Metro Board Chair Paul C. Smedberg said in the release. “There’s no day off for Metro. We’re open seven days a week, 365 days a year and want everyone to have a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday.”
