WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — A new report signals that most Americans plan to celebrate Independence Day on Thursday, and consumers will spend nearly 100 dollars on average for food.

The National Retail Federation says 87% of people will ring in the nation’s birthday and spend $90.42 to eat.

According to the NRF, plans to cookout, barbeque, or picnic have only increased since 2022, but spending per person has dropped several dollars since last year.

Here are some 4th of July celebrations taking place in the DMV

Despite this, DC News Now searched for the range of prices for popular mid-summer cookout foods to stretch your dollar as prices for essentials like groceries remain high.

According to prices published online Tuesday at Walmart, Giant and Safeway, we found the following:

A family pack of chicken thighs per pound ranged from $1.69 (Giant) to $4.50 (at Safeway).

A pack of at least 10 burgers costs $10 (Giant), and upwards of $18.99 (Safeway).

10 Oscar Mayer original hot dogs cost $2.50 at Walmart and Giant, while Safeway’s price was $5.99.

A watermelon will cost anywhere from four to seven dollars between the three supermarkets.
