Republican platform echoes Trump's vows for greater control over D.C.

The 2024 Republican platform officially prioritizes greater federal control over local Washington.

Why it matters: It echoes some of Donald Trump's rhetoric to " take over " the capital city.

Zoom in: The platform adopted Monday says "Republicans will reassert greater Federal Control over Washington, DC to restore Law and Order in our Capital City." It adds that it wants to "ensure Federal Buildings and Monuments are well-maintained."

    • The slogan: "Make Washington D.C. the Safest and Most Beautiful Capital City."
    • The language stops short of endorsing a repeal of D.C.'s home rule but is reminiscent of Trump's ideas for refining federal buildings (he likes classical architecture ) and rants about crime. He has floated sending in the National Guard for the latter.

Catch up quick: Trump has vowed on the campaign trail to "take over our horribly run" capital — one of his most oft-repeated phrases .

    • Trump wants to not only make an example out of a Democratic city but also punish the swamp.
    • His allies say they want to gut the federal bureaucracy and install 54,000 loyalists across the government — part of a plan devised by the Heritage Foundation called Project 2025.

Between the lines: Trump distanced himself from Project 2025 last week, claiming to "know nothing" about the plan.

    • But Trump himself has threatened to fire tens of thousands of civil servants and replace them with pre-vetted loyalists, as Axios' Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen reported Monday.
    • Trump's dream regime, they reported, would be empowered by a conservative Congress and Supreme Court, and free of hostile federal employees.

What they're saying: "I'm not worried that the language in this platform infringes upon home rule in the District of Columbia," D.C. GOP chair Pat Mara told Axios.

    • "What it does is emphasize public safety as the leading issue," he said.

The platform also says the GOP wants to close the Department of Education based in D.C. and "send it back to the States."
