WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Expected heavy rain and storms on Friday are giving people in the DMV a break from the heat and humidity, but that also means some potential for flooding, which is why we looked at some ways to keep you safe.

When flooding is a threat, it’s important to know which areas are at risk, have an emergency kit ready, all electronics charged, and communicate a plan with loved ones.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), during a flooding event, water levels can quickly change. The NWS encourages people to stay informed, get to higher ground, avoid flood water, “Turn around, don’t drown.” If you are ever trapped in a flood, find the highest point and call 911.

Officials said after a flood, it’s best to wait for an all-clear from officials and not enter any flood-damaged buildings, homes, or areas until it’s okay to do so, try your best to avoid flood waters, and if you’re driving, pay attention to road signs.
