WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — The cleanup continues around the Upper Chevy Chase neighborhood after Monday night’s storm brought down several trees and powerlines.

Phil Kerpen’s house was one of many homes that were damaged by fallen trees. Several branches landed near the bedroom window of Kerpen’s son, Fred.

“It was just, like, shock,” said Fred Kerpen.

For the Kerpens, this is the third tree to hit their house in 11 years.

Fallen trees damage at least 10 homes in the District

“I think it’s the last [tree] in range. So maybe we’re in the clear now for 100 years or so,” said Phil Kerpen. Luckily, despite the damage, he and his family are able to stay in their home.

“I don’t know, maybe another one will fall at a weird angle and get us,” he said.

The tree that hit their house stood in front of their next-door neighbor’s home. They were not able to escape the damage either, however.

Ashi Tandon’s wife had just left their dinette area when the tree fell.

“She came rushing up, she says there is a branch through the window right where she was sitting,” said Tandon.

“It would have hit her if she had not moved,” Tandon continued. “So we call it divine intervention. We’re very lucky.”

Ten homes suffered damage , according to the current estimates from DC Fire and EMS.

“This damage right here in the D.C. area is definitely bigger than what we saw in Gaithersburg,” said Charles McFarland, reflecting on the June 6 tornadoes that hit the area.

McFarland works for Reliable Contractors, a company that surveys storm damage for insurance purposes. He estimated that 20% of the homes in Monday’s storm suffered extensive damage.

Despite the damage, there have been no reports of any serious injuries from the storm.

According to Pepco, power has been restored to those in Upper Chevy Chase who lost it Monday.
