Two men were killed and two other people, including a 2-year-old girl, were wounded Thursday morning in a shooting in Southeast, D.C. police said.

Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith said the four victims were shot just before 11:30 a.m., when gunmen hopped out of a car and opened fire near the intersection of 22nd and Savannah streets in Southeast.

Two men were pronounced dead at the scene and another man was wounded, the chief said. He was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive.

Chief Smith said the toddler was hit by a bullet while her day care was out on a morning walk. The girl was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive. No other children were hit by gunfire.

"This is another example of gun violence that we cannot have in our communities. We are sick and tired of this," Chief Smith said during a press conference. "We want to say to our community, we are working hard every single day to ensure that this kind of violence is decreased in our community."

The gunmen got out of a white sedan before spraying bullets in the intersection, police said. They then jumped in a blue Dodge Charger to flee.

Metropolitan Police Department data shows that the two men's deaths Thursday would put the District’s homicide total at 101 for the year.

Chief Smith disputed that number at the press conference, saying five homicides included in this year’s count were from previous years. She said the correct number of homicides is 96.
