WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Flights and the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) were impacted Friday morning after a widespread Microsoft outage left several systems offline around the world.

This comes after Microsoft 365 posted on X that the company was “working on rerouting the impacted traffic to alternate systems to alleviate impact in a more expedient fashion” on Thursday night.

This left Microsoft users nationwide including banks, flights, and companies services to be unavailable.

Around 5 a.m., Metro posted on X that its services were delayed after computer systems went down across the globe. However, Metro stations opened on time and are running on schedule.

Metro said travelers can expect delays on the 74, 52, F6, T18, and W4 bus routes, but this was not related to the outage.

As of Friday morning, the WMATA’s website and call center were still down.

Customers and passengers headed to the airport can also expect to see delays as the outage continues to impact several systems. Airports are encouraging travelers to check the status of their flights before they arrive.

At the Reagan National Airport ( DCA ), numerous airlines canceled our delayed flights forcing passengers to be added to wait lists and given waivers.

“Our family flight is 6:45 [a.m.]. And then when we came here, we got information from the airline, American Airlines, that all the flights is canceled because of the computerized and so on and so on. And then they help us to put on the waiting list,” Rachmad Poetranto, told DC News Now at the airport.

American Airlines shared in a post on X that it was able to restore its services, however, several flights are continuing to be delayed.

On X , United Airlines shared that some of its flights are starting to resume and it is working to restore its systems. Delta shared that all of its flights were paused and the airline is working on a vendor technology issue.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the department is monitoring technical issues leading to these cancellations and delays.

“Our department will hold Frontier, and all airlines, to their responsibilities to meet the needs of passengers.,” said Buttigieg in a post on X.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) shared that it is closely monitoring technical issues that are impacting IT systems at U.S. Airlines.

Microsoft said the outage is under investigation and is working to mitigate the problem.
