WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — With a skyline that consists largely of memorials and monuments, there are a number of impressive structures in D.C. When it comes to the tallest, it may not be the one that first comes to mind.

(PAUSE FOR YOU TO THINK OF ONE)

If the image that popped into your head was the towering Washington Monument, that’s not a bad choice.

The tribute to the country’s first president was dedicated on February 21, 1885, one day before George Washington’s birthday. The National Park Service (NPS) says once the interior iron staircase was finished, the Washington Monument opened to the public in 1886, then closed for the majority of 1887 until it could be protected better from vandals. It reopened in 1888 with a public elevator.

As for its height, the Wshington Monument stands at 555 feet, but it’s not the tallest structure in the District.

That tallest structure in Washington, D.C.: the Hughes Memorial Tower.

According to The Washington Post , the 761-foot-tall tower, located at the 4th District police station on Georgia Avenue in Northwest, is named after former Metopolitan Police Deprtment police officer John S. Hughes. The Post goes on to explain that D.C. owns the tower, which the Office of Unified Communications (OUC) oversees.

The tower was completed in 1989. Hughes, whose name it bears, died in 1995.
