WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) –A new survey from the Associated Press shows Kamala Harris will have a fairly uncontested run to secure the Democratic nomination. Some alumni from Harris’s alma mater, Howard University, say they support her becoming the new nominee.

“The district 22 team [are] all in for Kamala Harris,” said Del. Ashanti Martinez, D- Prince George’s County.

Martinez, a Howard University Alum, is in favor of a fellow bison becoming the party’s nominee.

“She has always put the truth first and always in service to others, so that’s what it is about being a Howard University alum,” said Martinez. “She has lived those values, and we are so excited to see her at the top of the ticket for the democratic party because it really shows the diversity and growth of this party.”

Duane Foster, also a Howard alum, said he’s also rooting for Harris.

“I couldn’t be more excited. I think the timing is now, it’s right for her. As a Howard alum, we’re going to do everything we can to support her,” shared Foster.

Late Monday night, several delegates confirmed their support for Vice President Harris. According to a survey by the Associate Press , 2,668 delegates say they plan to vote for her, nearly 700 more votes than she needs, but 54 delegates are undecided.

Delegates still have the freedom to pick the nominee of their choice, but so far, the Associated Press has not named any other candidates in their survey.

Harris’s presidential bid comes after President Joe Biden decided not to seek re-election after many raised concerns about his health. Within hours, the “Harris for president” campaign gained momentum, garnering a lot of support from fellow Democrats.

If Harris is selected to become the Democratic presidential nominee, she will become the first Black woman and the first person of South Asian descent to be the nominee of a majority party on the ballot.

The decision is not final just yet. Delegates are expected to vote through a virtual roll call in August.
