Commanders Offer Cryptic Hint On Jayden Daniels' Starting Chances

    By Dave Holcomb,

Washington Commanders first-year head coach Dan Quinn didn't name rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels the team's starting quarterback at the start of training camp.

Instead, he offered the media a vague answer about when Daniels will earn the starting job.

"When he's ready, we'll know, and he will know," Quinn told reporters, via NBC Sports' JP Finlay .

The Commanders drafted Daniels at No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL draft. Daniels will presumably compete with Marcus Mariota for the starting job during training camp and the preseason.

Washington also has veteran signal caller Jeff Driskel and 25-year-old rookie Sam Hartman on its 90-man roster.

Daniels was the second quarterback off the board in the draft this past spring. The Chicago Bears drafted Caleb Williams first overall while the New England Patriots selected Drake Maye just after Daniels at No. 3.

The Bears have already named Williams their starting quarterback. But like Washington, New England has suggested it could start veteran placeholder Jacoby Brissett instead of Maye to begin the season.

Daniels played five college seasons, including the final two at LSU. As a senior in 2023, he registered career-highs of 3,812 passing yards and 40 touchdowns. Daniels also had only 4 interceptions last season.

He posted a career-best 72.2% completion percentage and 11.7 yards per pass, as well.
