ARLINGTON, Va. ( DC News Now ) — Arlington in Virginia and Washington, D.C. have been ranked the top two “fittest” cities in the U.S., according to Elevance Health Foundation and the American College of Sports Medicine’s survey.

The survey measured cities based on 33 different criteria, including the quantity of parks and recreation, biking and running trails and swimming pools.

DC, Arlington ranked among best places for parks by Trust for Public Land

Dr. Matthew Sedgley with American College of Sports Medicine, said the survey considers things people can do within the community such as strolling through different trails.

“You might have to go to work but how you get there, if it’s a healthy way,” Sedgley said. “Are there pools? Do they have baseball? The ability to ride a bike? If you want to play pickleball do you have to go look for a place?”

Arlington has been the fittest city on the survey for the seventh straight year.
