WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — A doggy day care, boarding and grooming facility that’s been under fire in the past year for a devastating flood and violent incident involving an employee has chosen a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The company announced Wednesday that Tina Leone would be stepping in as its CEO.

Leone previously served as CEO of the Ballston BID in Arlington, an organization supporting the 25-block area within Ballson, consisting of commercial and residential spaces.

She has more than 25 years of transformational economic development and management experience and has a personal mission to advance dogs’ well-being, according to a press release from District Dogs .

In the past, she served as a board member of the Animal Welfare League in Alexandria, chaired the American Brittany Rescue and founded Sporting Dog Rescue International.

“This year marks the 10 th anniversary of District Dogs, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by welcoming someone who shares our incredible passion for animal welfare and our vision for community building. Tina’s unique background makes her the ideal leader for the District Dogs family,” said District Dogs founder Jacob Hensley in part. “I have never been more optimistic about our future.”

Leone noted that she looks forward to creating community programs, events and experiences for District Dogs’s clients.

“What truly excites me about joining District Dogs is the opportunity to work every day alongside dedicated people who share my deep love for dogs,” Leone said, in part. “That combined with my extensive experience in leading and growing organizations, aligns perfectly with my personal values and professional aspirations. It is truly a dream job!”

Doggy daycare employee kicks dog for being ‘too energetic;’ dog dies

Wednesday’s announcement was made just shy of a year since a deadly flood at the daycare’s Northeast D.C. location.

Last August, water broke through the business’ front glass windows after six feet of water accumulated along Rhode Island Avenue.

Though 10 people and 20 dogs were rescued from inside the daycare, many dogs were not able to make it out.

Ten dogs died in the flood.

Many of the dogs’ owners blamed the daycare and the District for what happened, filing a lawsuit against the company back in May . Families said their dogs died in an “excruciating fashion,” desperately clawing and scratching for their lives while floodwaters rose above their kennels, according to court documents.

In February, six months after the flood, District Dogs was again under fire – this time, for an incident that happened at its Navy Yard location .

There, a dog had died after it was struck by an employee.

A police report from the Metropolitan Police Department said the employee was feeding the dogs when one of them, reportedly a puppy, “got too energetic.”

He tried to calm the dog down and kicked it, causing it to lose consciousness and die at a nearby veterinarian’s office.

District Dogs fired the employee responsible.
