    Man sentenced to 18 years for carjacking, shooting woman in Northwest DC

    WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — A man was sentenced to 18 years on Friday for carjacking and shooting a woman in Northwest D.C. nearly two years ago.

    Tayvon Owens, 31, of Washington, D.C., was convicted of armed carjacking, assault with significant bodily injury while armed and related charges in connection to shooting and carjacking a woman on Newton Street on Dec. 12, 2022.

    According to the evidence shown at the trial, Owens approached the woman, who was sitting in her parked car, opened the door, pulled out a gun and demanded she get out of the car.

    The woman complied but then tried to use the car door to protect herself.

    Owens then went around the car door, shot her in the knee and then pulled her out of the car before jumping into the car and driving off.

    The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) quickly found Owens in the 1400 block of Bangor Street in Southeast D.C.

    There, Owens jumped out of the woman’s car while it was still moving, causing it to crash into a tree.

    Owens tried to hide his gun behind his home before being arrested by police.
