WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) – More than 70 bars and restaurants across the District are permitted to stay open 24 hours a day through the next two weeks , as the Olympic Games get underway.

“We’ve done this [before], we love it, it’s one of the things that make D.C. great,” said Jessica Cooper, Senior Manager of Food and Beverage at Royal Sands Social Club. “We have this community that can all come together and we’re able to open for these events.”

Royal Sands, as well as three other Mission Group establishments, applied for and received a permit for the District’s Extended Hours program, which allows restaurants to stay open for 24 hours and serve alcohol until 4 a.m.

Mission Navy Yard, The Admiral and Salazar are also permitted.

Some DC bars to stay open 24 hours, serve alcohol late during summer events

The program is in effect from July 26 through Aug. 11 and again for the Paralympic Games, from Aug. 28 through Sept. 8.

“The Olympics are such an exciting part of the world culture and the world sports culture so we want to make sure we’re open so everybody can watch any sport they want,” said Cooper. “Especially with D.C. having the international community it has – we’re available for any sport you’re interested in.”

Cooper said to expect specials over the next two weeks, especially around the swimming events— after all, the centerpiece of Royal Sands is its pool.

“Obviously with us being a pool I’m sure something will happen for the Olympic swim teams,” she said.

Jevon Brown said he supports the District’s decision to allow extended hours.

“I’m a night owl, so I’m always looking for someplace to eat and chill late at night. If I can watch sports on top of that, I’m all the way in,” said Brown.

As for which events he’ll most likely head out for, it’s a tossup.

“All of them. Every single one. For the swimming, water polo, beach volleyball, I love all the sports,” said Brown.

Patrons should check with each specific establishment for operating hours.

At Royal Sands, Cooper said hours will likely change based on the events.

“However, if there’s a game on you want to see, contact us and we’ll make sure we’re open for it,” she said.
