WASHINGTON ( DC News N o w ) — It’s beach season, and when you are at the beach, you may see different-colored flags near or at the lifeguard stands. But what do the various colors represent, and how do you know when it is safe to be in the water and when it’s not?

Weather Flash: Protecting yourself when lightning strikes

    Different flag meanings:

    • Red Flag: Hazardous conditions, such as high rip currents and high surf, are possible. Use caution.
    • Double Red Flag: The water is closed to the public. If you are caught in the water, you can risk receiving a fine.
    • Yellow Flag: Moderate risk for rip currents.
    • Green Flag: Low risk of a hazard and calm conditions.
    • Purple Flag: Marine life, such as jellyfish and stingrays, has been spotted in the water. However, this does not mean that sharks are in the water.
