Two HBCU players up for top award in FCS football

Two HBCU players, one from the SWAC and another from the MEAC, are up for FCS Football’s top award.

Grambling State University quarterback Myles Crawley and Howard University running back Jarett Hunter have both been named to the preseason watch list for the Walter Payton Award — given to the top player in FCS football.

Myles Crawley has achieved significant milestones.

He was named the 2024 SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year earlier this month, reflecting his talent and hard work. In the previous season, Crawley threw for 2,303 yards and 16 touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the top HBCU quarterbacks. His performances this season include a notable game against Hampton, where he completed 25-of-38 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Crawley continues to lead Grambling with impressive stats and leadership.

Jarett Hunter, the running back for Howard University, has had a significant impact on the team’s performance. Before joining Howard, Hunter played high school football, where he showcased his skills and potential. His impressive high school career laid the foundation for his success at the collegiate level.

At Howard University, Hunter has been a key player, contributing to the team’s offensive success. For example, in a crucial game against North Carolina Central, Hunter, along with Eden James, combined for 197 rushing yards and three touchdowns, helping Howard secure a decisive 50-20 victory. This win played a vital role in Howard’s push for the MEAC title and a spot in the Celebration Bowl.

Hunter’s consistent performance and ability to break through defenses have made him a standout player on the team. His contributions have been instrumental in several key victories for Howard, reinforcing his importance to the Bison’s offense.

Both players face an uphill battle to claim the award, however. Alcorn State’s Steve McNair was the last HBCU player to win the award, named after former Jackson State star Walter Payton.
