    City reports discharge of untreated wastewater

    NOTICE OF DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED WASTEWATER

    The City of Washington had intermittent discharge of untreated wastewater from the collection system on Sunday, July 14, 2024 around 5:44 am until 8:20 am Monday, July 15 th 2024. The pump station located at 2650 West Fifth Street near the intersection of 264 and Page Road experienced power failure, causing approximately 15,000 gallons of untreated wastewater to spill, with approximately 14,000 gallons having the potential to reach Mitchell Branch, in the Tar-Pamlico River Basin. Upon discovery of the pump station malfunction, City personnel were able to correct the malfunction within 10 minutes. Cleanup efforts took place immediately and continued through the day Monday. The power interruption to the pump station has been corrected and necessary repairs have been completed.

    The North Carolina Division of Environmental Quality was notified of the event on Monday July 15 th 2024.

    This notice was required by North Carolina General Statues Article 21, Chapter 143.215C.  For more information contact the City of Washington Public Works Department at 252-975-9332.
