WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — The City of Washington received a $500,000 grant from the Resilient Coastal Communities Program through the Department of Environmental Quality.

The funding will be used in the engineering and design of a living shoreline and levee near the city’s wastewater treatment facility. This is to restore the shoreline and protect the city from future flooding.

“We’re excited about the funding that we’ve received. Anytime that we can improve any of our resiliency efforts to prevent stormwater damage or impacts, it’s very important for the community,” Washington City Manager Jonathan Russell said.

The engineering and design phase is expected to take six to eight months to complete. City leaders plan to go after more grant funding to help with building the project.
