On Sunday (July 14), Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson took to his official X account (formerly Twitter) to share with his followers a photo showing a mannequin, or at least the top half of one, in a blonde wig in the backseat of a Washington woman’s car, that was pulled over for speed in the HOV (High-Occupancy Vehicle) lane, meant for vehicles with more than one person inside.

The image showed the dummy sitting atop a cooler that was carefully positioned to prop up the mannequin whose body was missing. The dummy wore a long blonde wig and a navy blue sweatshirt, and its head was titled to the left, as if to confuse passing cars on the right side of the vehicle, outside of the HOV lane, making it appear, at a quick glance, that the mannequin was a real human in the backseat.

According to Trooper Rick Johnson, who says he’s the official Washington State Patrol District 2 Public Information Officer for King County, the driver pulled over was a woman who was traveling in the HOV lane 20 miles over the speed limit. The stop happened on Interstate 5, Southbound, near South 272nd Street.

When asked about the mannequin “passenger” in the backseat of her car, the Washington woman reportedly told the police that it was a “training aid” and that it was positioned upright in the backseat because she was attempting to properly dry the hair” on its head. Trooper Rick Johnson said that the woman was released after the stop and given a speeding ticket for traveling over the limit in the HOV lane.

Taking to his official account on X with the image taken at the scene of the traffic stop, Trooper Rick Johnson fully wrote in the post, “This ‘passenger’ was riding in a car traveling in the HOV at 80 mph in a 60. The driver said this is her training aid and the reason it was positioned this way was to properly dry the hair. She received an infraction for speeding at HOV. This was SB 5 near S. 272nd.”
