A United States marshal shot a suspected carjacker last week near the home of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, according to local authorities.

Washington Police shared that 18-year-old Kentrell Flowers was shot after allegedly pointing a gun at two marshals in “an apparent attempt to carjack” them.

The shooting occurred on the 2100 block of 11th Street, near the residence of Sotomayor.

In a statement to NBC News , the US Marshals Service confirmed that deputies were part of a unit protecting the residences of Supreme Court justices but did not provide further detail.

The incident was first reported by The Daily Mail.

A federal complaint filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia cited in the reports shared that two marshals were parked in a government-issued vehicle at 1:17 a.m. when a silver van pulled up next to them, and Flowers got out.

The suspect then allegedly approached the driver’s side door and pointed a gun through the window, the complaint shared.

It was at this point that one of the marshals inside the vehicle pulled his department-issued gun and fired four times at the suspect.

One of the shots hit Flowers in the mouth before the van he arrived in took off without him, the complaint shared.

Flowers were then taken for treatment at a local hospital. According to the complaint, he was later arrested after receiving medical treatment.

Law enforcement found a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson inside his right pants pocket, the complaint shared.

“It had (0) rounds in the chamber and (8) rounds of .40 caliber ammunition in a 13-round capacity magazine,” the complaint said.

The shooting is being investigated by internal affairs as it does with all “law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District of Columbia,” law enforcement shared, NBC News reported.

Flowers has been charged with attempted carjacking and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon.
