James Carville says Democrats will lose presidency unless last-ditch mini-primary held

Democratic strategist James Carville predicted Democrats are guaranteed to lose the presidential election if they don't remove President Joe Biden and replace him with a candidate selected from a last-ditch mini-primary.

Carville joined the growing chorus of Democrats calling for Biden to step down and ruled out replacing him immediately with Vice President Kamala Harris, instead laying out a detailed plan for how to replace him in a mini-primary of sorts, as floated by Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) and others. Carville's spin would have former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton select a group of nominees who would then be voted on.

"We’re going to nominate a new ticket in a highly democratic and novel way, not in the backrooms of Washington, D.C., or Chicago," Carville wrote in an op-ed for the New York Times.

"I want to see the Democratic Party hold four historic town halls between now and the Democratic National Convention in August — one each in the South, the Northeast, the Midwest, and the West," he continued. "We can recruit the two most obvious and qualified people in the world to facilitate substantive discussions: Barack Obama and Bill Clinton."

He then suggested that the two former presidents would select eight candidates, with one being Harris. Carville argued that eight was the maximum in order to make the town hall manageable.

"Town halls will give Americans a fresh look at Ms. Harris and introduce them to our deep bench of smart, dynamic, tested leaders," he said. "In addition, Democratic delegates will get to further grill and stress-test these leaders in public and private meetings before a formal vote of all the delegates at the Democratic convention."

Carville compared the enthusiasm that would be whipped up by the hypothetical matchup to the Super Bowl.

Though being open to changing some details, the leading strategist argued that what he outlined was the best way to proceed forward.

"A super democratic process, the opposite of what Mr. Trump and his MAGA minions would do, is how we’re going to honor that wisdom in our own 'Will democracy prevail?' moment," Carville concluded.

The suggestion is one of the most thorough outlines of how Biden could be replaced not by Harris.

Most Democrats have remained lockstep behind the president, with only a handful of congressmen openly calling on Biden to drop out. The president, for his own part, has declared his intention to stay on the Democratic ticket in a letter published Monday.
