The suspected shooter and one other person have died following a shooting Saturday at a rally for former President Donald Trump , in Butler County, Pennsylvania , authorities have confirmed.

Two rallygoers were critically injured, according to the Secret Service. Authorities also said the shooter fired on Trump from "an elevated position outside of the rally venue."

The former president and presumptive Republican nominee hosted a rally Saturday in Butler County, north of Pittsburgh, that was interrupted by gunfire . The former president appeared to sustain an injury to his ear before Secret Service agents whisked him off the stage. He later confirmed that his ear was grazed by a bullet.

The Secret Service and the Trump campaign confirmed that the former president is in stable condition and received medical attention at a nearby facility. He was seen pumping his fist in defiance as Secret Service officers helped him off the stage and into the armored car in his motorcade.

Authorities have not released the identities of the shooter and the audience member who were killed. The Secret Service "neutralized" the shooter, spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement.

Law enforcement officers are reportedly investigating the shooting as an assassination attempt. Secret Service officials engaged the FBI on Saturday afternoon, Guglielmi said. The FBI is reportedly leading the investigation.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department "will bring every available resource to bear to this investigation.”

"We will not tolerate violence of any kind, and violence like this is an attack on our democracy," Garland said.

President Joe Biden spoke Saturday evening, condemning political violence and saying he had tried to contact Trump. Biden stopped short of labeling the incident an assassination attempt.

In a statement hours after the attack, Trump offered his condolences to the families of the rally attendees who were killed and injured. He confirmed that he was shot in the upper right part of his ear.
