A majority of Republicans believe it is time for the GOP to pass the baton to leaders younger than former President Donald Trump , according to a poll released this week.

A YouGov survey investigating what people are looking for in a president found that 59% of conservative respondents said they are partial to candidates 75 years old or younger. Only 2% of Republicans said they wanted a president older than 75.

The news comes as Trump, 78, makes a bid for a second term in the White House. Born during World War II, President Joe Biden is the oldest sitting president to occupy the White House.

Ten percent of Republicans surveyed favored candidates between 35 and 49, 33% supported candidates between 50 and 64, and 16% preferred someone between 65 and 75.

Meanwhile, the majority of Democrats surveyed favored were partial to someone between 50 and 64. Biden’s heir apparent and the Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, is 59.

As Harris races to become the country’s first female president, the survey showed that the majority of people say they do not have a preference about the sex of whoever occupies the White House.

However, GOP voters are far more likely to prefer a male in the Oval Office than their Democratic counterparts. Seventy percent of Democrats have no preference between a male or female president, compared to 49% of Republicans.

The YouGov poll was conducted between July 25 and 29 and sampled 2,266 adults.
