Biden’s approval rating rises after he dropped out of 2024 race

President Joe Biden's approval rating has gone up since he stepped down as the Democratic presidential nominee on July 21.

Biden saw some of the lowest presidential approval ratings in history in the past year, a trend that was broken in one of the first approval ratings polls taken since he dropped out. In an NPR-PBS News-Marist National Poll released on Tuesday, Biden's approval rating reached 46%, his highest in more than a year.

His approval rating in the last Marist poll taken while he was still running was 43%, with other polls having him much lower.

A Reuters-Ipsos poll released in May found that just 36% of people approved of Biden's job as president, tying his record-low performance rating in July 2022.

Democrats have pitched Biden's decision to drop out as a reflection of his dutiful commitment to the greater good, which appears to have worked on parts of the electorate.

After stepping down as the Democratic nominee, Biden has been relatively quiet, with media attention moving to his successor. He is due to break this self-imposed exile shortly to campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris in swing states, such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, according to a Politico report.

The NPR-PBS News-Marist National Poll was conducted from Aug. 1 through Aug. 4, surveying 1,513 people. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.4 points.
