MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough contended that Republicans “chose their fate” by nominating former President Donald Trump over another candidate, wondering when the party would focus on “winning elections again.”

The 2024 presidential election has seen a major shakeup over the last few weeks after President Joe Biden bowed out of his reelection bid and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris , with Harris seeing a spark in support against Trump in polling data. Scarborough referenced comments from the Washington Examiner’s Tim Carney on the 2024 election, in which he contended Trump made "a dumb mistake" when he said on Truth Social that Harris used artificial intelligence to show a crowd waiting for her when her plane landed.

“They chose their fate,” Scarborough said on Monday. “We warned about what they were doing. I will tell you that I heard, I know you heard, I know so many people heard real excitement about another woman who was running for president, another woman that was younger and also had a diverse background. And that was Nikki Haley. I can’t count the number of people I heard talking about how excited they were about Nikki Haley, whether they were Republicans, independents, Democrats. I heard a lot of Democrats talking about Nikki Haley, being excited about her, much in the same way they’re talking now about Kamala Harris.”

Carney wrote in a recent op-ed that Trump’s criticisms against Harris are typically “an asset” to the Harris campaign . He explained the former president is “often incoherent, irrelevant, or factually sloppy” when criticizing Harris or Democrats and that this is a “great weakness” that can help the Democratic Party in November.

Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski also criticized Trump for his comments on Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), arguing the former president “attacked him for his physical appearance.” Trump said during a campaign rally in Montana that Tester had “the biggest stomach” he had ever seen.

Carney similarly took issue with Trump’s comments on Tester and wrote, “This is why Democrats wanted Trump to be the nominee.”

Since stepping in for Biden as the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee, Harris has seen a boost in support against Trump in polling data, with one poll showing the vice president getting 52% of support from registered voters and Trump getting 48%. Many polls previously favored Trump against Biden, with many questioning Biden’s electability after the first presidential debate at the end of June.

The second debate is set to be held on Sept. 10, which will be hosted by ABC News. Trump has stated he would prefer for Fox News to host the debate, but he has nevertheless stated that “we’ll be debating” Harris .
